About the American Bittern:
Found throughout Canada, the US, and Central America, this bird makes its home in marshes and shallow wetlands with marshy vegetation (cattails, reeds, etc). 
Eats a wide variety of aquatic prey, such as fish, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. 
The American Bittern is declining in population in many areas. This is largely due to habitat loss where marshes and wetlands are drained and destroyed for human use.
